Tryouts
Tryouts (for new team members) will be held the week of
April 28 – May 2nd between 3:30 & 4:30pm at the Sharks' pool
(the City of Sugar Land pool at Wood and Seventh Streets). The fee for
tryouts is $25. No refunds will be made.
If the swimmer qualifies for the team, the remaining registration fee
will be due before the new Shark may begin practice.
To qualify for team membership, a swimmer 10 years old or younger must be able to swim one length of the pool (25 meters) and swimmers 11 years and older must swim two lengths of the pool (50 meters) consistently. This means the swimmer must not touch bottom or hang onto the side of the pool or lane ropes to make it across the pool. Returning Sharks do not need to try out. Swimmers who pass the tryouts will be given preference on the team. Those who cannot swim the required distance will be placed on the team as space permits. The team roster will be finalized in May.
Registration Fee
The registration fee for the 2008 Season is $95 for the
first swimmer and $90 for any additional siblings.
Fin-Off Party
All Sharks and their families are invited to the
Kick-Off Party (aka Fin-Off Party), which will be held on the evening of
Saturday, May 17th. This
will be a fun time to join your fellow Sharks for swimming, music, and making
new friends. Usually it is held from
6-9 p.m. at the Sharks' pool. Be
watching for details soon!
Age Groups
Age group placement, according to league rules, is
determined by the swimmer’s age as of May 31st. Every swimmer must
submit a copy of his/her birth certificate in order to verify his/her age.
Swimmers ages seven to 10 and under are allowed to compete in two individual
events and two relay events. Swimmers ages 11 and up can compete in three
individual events and two relay events.
Swimmers six and under compete in the freestyle and the freestyle

Meet Schedule
Dual meets are scheduled on Mondays, beginning June 9th, running for six (6) consecutive weeks. Meets start at 5:00 pm, but swimmers are required to be at their home pool by 3:30 and at away meets by 4:00. Prelims will be July 17th. Finals are scheduled for July 19th and All-Stars for July 21st. A detailed calendar of events will be available in May.
Swimsuits
The 2008 official Shark swim suit is the red and black “Shooting Star” by Speedo. They are available at Lane 4 Swim Shop, soon to be located at the intersection of Highway 6 an Williams Trace. Make sure to mention that you are with the Sugar Land Sharks when purchasing your suit. Team suits are not mandatory; however, swimmers are REQUIRED to wear a one-piece red, black, or red and black swimsuit for the meets and for the team picture.
Pictures
Team and individual swimmer pictures will be taken at
the pool Wednesday, May 21st during the time normally used for
practices. Please remember to wear a
swimsuit in team colors! (There will be no practice on this day.)
Team Shirts/Decals
Shark t-shirts are free to all swimmers who qualify for
the team. Both regular t-shirts and tank tops will be available. Additional shirts may be purchased for
$10.00 each. Your swimmer will have an opportunity to buy a decal with Sugar
Land Sharks logo. You can even choose to add the swimmer's name on it! The
cost of the decal without name is $7.00; personalized is $8.00. To order,
please, fill out the form enclosed in the packet and return to
Swim-A-Fund
The Sugar Land Sharks have one fund raiser each summer,
called “Swim-a-Fund”. Each member
swims non-stop for a period of 30 minutes.
The swimmers obtain pledges for each lap completed, or he/she may ask
the sponsor for a flat donation instead.
Although Swim-a-Fund has been
mandatory in the past, a swimmer’s participation in this fun event no longer
determines if he/she will receive a trophy at the end of the season. Swim-a-fund has been scheduled for the
morning of June 14th, with a rain date of June 21st.
Watch for more information soon. This is an event the kids really enjoy!
Trophies
Each swimmer who competes in at least three (3) dual
meets will be presented with a trophy at the Trophy Party. The Trophy Party for the ’08 Season is
scheduled for the night of finals, July 19th. Besides handing out trophies, other special
awards are given, Board elections are held, and the End-of-Season Video is
shown. It’s always a fun-filled night
and a great way to end another terrific Shark season. Be watching for details and ways in which you
can help make this a successful evening!
Coaching Staff
The Sharks Board is excited to announce that Head Coach
A swimmer must practice and compete only with his/her
SHRSL team from April 1st through the end of SHRSL
competition. Participation in any
non-SHRSL-sanctioned event after April 1st is prohibited by SHRSL,
excluding high school and middle school swim team practices. Swim clinics/camps, not to exceed 7 days of
instruction, are also excluded from this rule. Please contact Mike Rondinaro at rondo2@peoplepc.com
with questions. To be in compliance with the Southwest Houston Recreational
Swim League rules, our team is limited to 200 swimmers. Since we may receive applications in excess
of this number, we need to monitor and potentially restrict the number of
swimmers for each age group.
Volunteers
There is an extraordinary amount of work and many jobs
to fill, especially at a swim meet. Many
of the tasks take minimal time.
Parents/guardians must complete the volunteer sheet, and help with at
least one Level-One job (see Volunteer Form).
If this form is not completed and returned, registration for your
child cannot be accepted, and his/her place on the team will not be
confirmed. Please, contact
Stroke Judges
Every year there is a serious need for eligible parents
to serve as Stroke Judges during meets.
The team has a strong tradition of meeting the need for this
challenging and important position.
The function of a Stroke Judge is to see that each swimmer in his/her
assigned lane performs the stroke properly.
To aid the parents in this duty, free league Stroke Judge Clinics are
offered at neighborhood pools some Saturday mornings before the season
begins. Dates and locations will be
mailed to those who volunteer. Note: Only those
who attend the clinics can serve as a Stroke Judge, Meet Director or
Starter. If you have any questions,
